Two Close–Separation Quasar–Quasar Pairs in the Large Bright Quasar Survey
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of two close quasar– quasar pairs found in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) (Hewett et al. 1995, AJ, 109, 1498). The two components of the 2153-2056 pair (z = 1.845, ∆θ = 7. 8, B = 17.9 and 21.3) have the same redshifts within the relatively large uncertainty, ∆vA−B = −1100±1500 km s, of the observations. The quasars are most likely spa...
متن کاملQuasar Evolution and the Baldwin Effect in the Large Bright Quasar Survey
From a large homogeneous sample of optical/UV emission line measurements for 993 quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS), we study correlations between emission line equivalent width and both restframe ultraviolet luminosity (i.e., the Baldwin Effect) and redshift. Our semi-automated spectral fitting accounts for absorption lines, fits blended iron emission, and provides upper limits...
متن کاملThe SCUBA Bright Quasar Survey II: unveiling the quasar epoch at submillimetre wavelengths
We present results of the first systematic search for submillimetre (submm) continuum emission from z ∼ 2, radio-quiet, optically-luminous (MB < −27.5) quasars, using the SCUBA array camera on the JCMT. We have observed a homogeneous sample of 57 quasars in the redshift range 1.5 < z < 3.0— the epoch during which the comoving density of luminous AGN peaks— to make a systematic comparison with a...
متن کاملThe bright quasar 3 C 273 Thierry
We review the observed properties of the bright quasar 3C 273 and discuss the implications of these observations for the emission processes and in view of gaining a more global understanding of the object. Continuum and line emission are discussed. The emission from the radio domain to gamma rays are reviewed. Emphasis is given to variability studies across the spectrum as a means to gain some ...
متن کاملAn Exploratory Chandra survey of Large Bright Quasar Survey broad absorption line QSOs
We are in the process of obtaining a complete sample of exploratory X-ray observations of broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS). This survey is composed of short (5– 7 ks) Chandra ACIS-S3 observations designed to significantly constrain X-ray fluxes and hardness ratios. Our sample avoids the selection biases of some previous surveys while providing X-ray da...
